VA, law enforcement, pharmacies have ‘Take Back Day’ for prescription drugs this week

The Montana VA Health Care System, various Helena-area pharmacies and law enforcement agencies are participating this week in the Drug Enforcement Administration National Prescription Take Back Day, offering a place for people to drop off unneeded medications from their homes as a way of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction.

The public can drop off expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, at Montana VA pharmacies at Fort Harrison VA in Helena and Billings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

According to a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, most people who misused a prescription pain reliever obtained the medicine “from a friend or relative for free.”…
