Ahmaud Arbery’s Killers Seek New Trial

Three Georgia men convicted in the 2020 murder of Ahmaud Arbery are seeking a new trial. Travis McMichael, who fired the fatal shot, claims Arbery was resisting arrest and attacked him.

McMichael was sentenced to life without parole for nine charges, including murder and assault. Gregory McMichael, his father, also received life without parole for murder and other charges. William “Roddie” Bryan, who filmed the incident, was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for murder and assault.

The men previously pleaded not guilty to state charges. They have also been convicted and sentenced for federal hate crimes.

Gregory McMichael apologized to Arbery’s family after the federal sentencing, denying malicious intent.

The request for a new trial is currently being heard in court. The outcome of the hearing is pending.
