Quincy Receives $10.3 For New Firefighters, Firehouse

Standing outside Quincy Fire Department headquarters on Monday morning, Cong. Stephen Lynch joined local officials to announce Quincy had been awarded a $6.18 million federal grant that will allow for the hiring of 16 new firefighters next spring. They also touted a $4.12 million federal earmark that will help pay for the cost of a new fire station.

Lynch, Mayor Thomas Koch, City Council President Ian Cain, Fire Chief Joseph Jackson and IAFF Local 792 President Thomas Bowes announced Quincy had been awarded the $6.18 million federal SAFER grant for the hiring of the new firefighters. The $4.12 million in federal Community Project Funding for the new fire station, which will be built on a parcel of land across Quincy Avenue from the current central fire station, had been announced earlier this year.

During Monday’s announcement, Lynch said that Congress now awards funding to municipalities based on local need.

“We ask each city and town what do you need, what do you see as being your highest priorities. Thankfully, we have a mayor who is totally connected to what the city of Quincy needs. We are blessed to have a state delegation that is intimately involved in what’s going on each and every day in Quincy. And we have a city council and a school committee that are also totally engaged,” Lynch said…
