New research highlights financial burden of cancer diagnosis

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — New research is shedding light on the significant financial challenges faced by cancer patients, revealing that a diagnosis can impact more than just health.

Krista Powers, a breast cancer survivor, shared her experience, saying, “I’ve had a little bit of a setback with one of my incisions healing.” Powers, who is self-employed, explained the financial toll of her illness. “I realized I had to surrender my clients and my business contracts and working with the chamber of commerce and that sort of thing,” she said. “In the midst of dealing with breast cancer and the physicality of it, it was this mental and financial hit of being terrified.”

The new research compares individuals living with cancer to those without, showing that cancer patients often have lower credit scores and a greater risk of financial bankruptcy. In some cases, credit scores averaged 80 points lower for those with the illness…
