Ojai becomes first U.S. city to ban torture breeding

The city of Ojai banned torture breeding, the practice of purposefully breeding animals like French Bulldogs, English bulldogs, pugs, and other animals to have deformed bodies and extreme features, causing suffering.

Ojai is the first city in the United States to ban the practice, according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA is a nonprofit animal rights organization.

When was the ordinance adopted?

The City Council voted on Tuesday to adopt a companion animal protection ordinance that protects breathing-impaired breeds who suffer from issues due to smushed faces and restricted airways, according to a news release.

“I’m thrilled that Ojai is setting a new national standard for protecting dogs and cats from being bred to suffer,” Ojai Mayor Betsy Stix said in a statement. “Our companion animals are cherished members of our families and our communities, so I hope that this inspires other cities around the country to adopt companion animal protection ordinances of their own.”…
