GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Officials with the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) have issued a warning about potential fraud affecting SNAP benefits across the state. Thieves are targeting those recipients and could wipe EBT cards clean, making off with the benefits of more than 277,000 households in South Carolina.

Since August, DSS officials confirm they have investigated 3,474 reports of fraud. Connelly-Anne Rageley, chief external affairs officer with DSS stresses that the problem is not just happening in South Carolina.

“Scammers are out there. They are relentless. They will do anything to get ahead. They are thieves and they have no ethics or no mercy for a family that’s struggling or for a single mom or dad who is trying to raise their family,” said Ragley. “They don’t care. They are there to steal and to harm and it doesn’t matter to them who is impacted by this. While we can’t prevent all crime, we want you to have the tools and the resources and the reminders to try to make sure you’re not a victim of this electronic theft.”…
