Oakland Police Commission sees big leadership changes

The Oakland Police Commission, a civilian volunteer board overseeing the Oakland Police Department, announced several leadership changes during its meeting Thursday.

Three new commissioners — Shane Thomas-Williams, Shawana Booker, and Samuel Dawit — began their terms on Oct. 17. Booker and Dawit will serve on the commission until Oct. 16, 2026, and Thomas-Williams will serve through Oct. 16, 2027.

“In my brief experience reviewing them, they’re not only extremely qualified to sit here but extremely eager to serve the city of Oakland,” Ricardo Garcia-Acosta, who was elected by commissioners as the new chair of the Police Commission, said during Thursday’s meeting…
