New GPS warning system aims to prevent Illinois roadside crashes

METAMORA (25News Now) – GPS apps are going to start warning drivers with official alerts from Illinois State Police and other emergency responders.

The Illinois State Police have partnered with Google Public Sector and the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology to develop a real-time, GPS-based alert system. The technology will notify drivers through apps when they should slow down and move over because an officer is stopped due to an incident.

The warnings are already active in the Waze app, and they will be coming to Google Maps soon. Official alerts will say they are from Illinois State Police. When an alert is active, that means state troopers are en route to an incident or already on the scene…
