Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan celebration at the Presbyterian Church

This Sunday, October 27, the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff will hold a special Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan worship service. The community is invited to attend the service, which begins at 11 a.m. As a celebration of the Presbyterian Church’s Scottish roots, it also honors families near and far, connected by relationships and faith.

The service will begin with a processional led by the church Sexton carrying the Beadle (Bible) ushered in by the inspiring music of members of the Jefferson Pipe Band, who will play throughout the service. Special Banners of Faith will be displayed in the sanctuary.

The legend of the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan began when the English attempted to extinguish Scottish culture by passing laws that no one could wear any tartan garment, such as a plaid kilt. Bagpipes were also banned and defined as a weapon. During this time, the women of the highland clans would take a small piece of their family tartan to the Kirk (church) to be secretly blessed and to pray for God’s protection for their clan and the members who were far away…
