Unlike most other sports during any high school year, the majority of the volleyball season comes in the form of tournaments where teams can play multiple matches in a seasons.
However, when tournaments are predominantly filled with teams that all know each other like the annual News-Herald Invitational, the level of familiarity adds a layer of intrigue and competitiveness for all the coaches.
“This is Downriver bragging rights,” Flat Rock head coach Mackenzie Kaiser said. “You come here to try and win this tournament where you know everyone. You know who is on the other teams and who the best players are. It is a testament to being able to beat teams you sometimes lose to, or even lose to teams that you’ve beaten before.”…
