FSU’s overcrowded campus: the effects on student life and learning

Students would rather worry about cramming for their exams during the midterm season than navigating a cramped campus. The academic prowess of Florida State University has attracted students from across the nation, boasting 43,701 students in 2023, according to the Office of Institutional Research.

It’s deep enough into the semester that the impacts of this large student body have made themselves apparent, cutting into the educational and personal lives of many students. But what are some of the most pertinent problems?

After being accepted into the academically rigorous university, students must first decide where they are going to live. The 18 on-campus residences can hold approximately 6,700 students total, according to University Housing. Freshmen are encouraged to stay in dorms. McCullom, Ragans, Broward and Traditions are apartment-style and typically given to upperclassmen, with younger students normally assigned to the traditional suite-style dorms, like Magnolia, Azalea, Dorman and Deviney…
