Asthma drug halt tied to more hospital visits

Additional Coverage:

Five-year-old Burton Hayes’s asthma was controlled by Flovent, but its manufacturer discontinued the brand name version. Despite switching to an alternative medication, Burton’s symptoms worsened, resulting in hospitalization.

Data analysis revealed a significant increase in asthma-related hospitalizations and ICU admissions among those who stopped using Flovent. Experts attribute this to the ease of use of Flovent, which was particularly beneficial for children.

Although an authorized generic version of Flovent is available, it may not be covered by insurance or may be more expensive than the brand name version. Insurance companies have also become more restrictive in covering asthma medications, making it harder for patients to access effective treatment.

Despite these challenges, Burton’s mother was able to secure prior authorization for the authorized generic and saw a significant improvement in his symptoms. However, other patients may face barriers in accessing this medication, highlighting the complexities and frustrations of drug pricing and insurance coverage.
