In a major turnaround from a year ago, Phoenix City Council unanimously approved an administration request to step up a campaign against speeding motorists and red-light runners by deploying cameras at some dangerous intersections and along some busy streets sometime next year.
The vote on Oct. 22 not only marked a different posture from a year ago, when Council failed to act on a similar administration request, but also came after Vice Mayor Debra Stark’s concession that the city is losing its war against dangerous motorists.
“There are many ways to approach roadway safety, obviously, engineering education, but also enforcement,” Stark said. “We adopted Vision Zero, which gives us the opportunity to pursue grants from the (federal) infrastructure bill that was passed a few years ago, and hopefully we can find some funding to help us with engineering.
