Tesla is adding millions of square feet to its Austin factory

Tesla’s Austin factory , which already fills the space of about 100 football fields, plans to add another 5 million square feet of facilities by the end of next year.

A slew of filings submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reveal plans for projects with cryptic names, such as Castings and Stamping, though some details offer suggestions of what the space could be used for.

For example, a project named Body in White refers to a stage of automobile manufacturing when the car body’s frame has been built but still more work needs to be done to assemble and paint the vehicle. The scope of work for that project alone involves nearly 1.5 million square feet of ground-up construction and complete interior finish out at the electric vehicle manufacturing facility.
