1,400 inmates evacuated from Western NC prisons, state officials provide update on construction after Helene

PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Thousands of people are still displaced from Hurricane Helene, and that includes several inmates as well.

The storm took out several detention facilities causing offenders to be moved to prisons across the state, including Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw.

Keith Acree with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction told WECT Wednesday nearly 1,400 inmates were divided between around 12 facilities in the eastern part of the state…
