Concerns rise over upcoming animal shelter law in New York state

PERU, N.Y. — Staff members at the Elmore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are expressing concerns about a new state law, the Companion Animal Care Standards Act, which is set to take effect in December 2025.

According to members, the law introduces new requirements for animal shelter facilities and imposes additional veterinary standards for community animals that enter shelters, which they fear could complicate operations.
