‘Spooky World was a big deal’: Auburn native Mike Nelson carves his niche as master carpenter of horror

While “Halloween” director John Carpenter is considered to be a “master of horror,” Mike Nelson has carved his niche as a master carpenter of horror.

Originally from Auburn, Nelson, a Worcester Vocational Technical High School graduate, is now creating horror props and sets for hard rock and hip-hop bands Ice Nine Kills and Twiztid for their stage shows. He has also dressed up several horror conventions including “Silver Scream Con III,” which took place in September at the DCU Center in Worcester.

When he was a fourth grader at Pakachoag Elementary School in Auburn, Nelson, who now lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana, started making “Ghostbusters” proton packs that rivaled those found in toy stores…
