Search widens for suspect who shot State Trooper known for kindness

EAST MEADOW, Long Island (PIX11) — A wide-ranging search is on for whoever shot and injured a state trooper who’s got a strong reputation for being kind and helpful.

Trooper Thomas Mascia, 27, thought that he was providing aid to a motorist, according to state police, when he pulled up behind what appeared to be a stalled car late Wednesday night, and then, somebody in the car shot at him, multiple times.

Mascia is stable, after recovering from surgery on Thursday, but the situation has unnerved the trooper’s family and his many friends, as the search for the shooter continues.

At around 11:45 on Wednesday night, Mascia pulled up behind a dark-colored Dodge Charger sedan that was parked on the left-hand median of the westbound Southern State Parkway, state police said. As Mascia approached the sedan, someone opened fire on him, hitting him in the right thigh, just above the knee…
