Over $100k awarded for local food co-op to improve access to healthy food

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Across North Carolina, $576,000 in grants were recently awarded to improve access to healthy food in undeserved communities.

This funding comes from a partnership between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Reinvestment Fund, and through the Healthy Foods Financing Initiative Planning Grant Program.

In Wilmington, $126,000 has been allotted to assist in the creation of the Northside Food Co-op, which will be a “community-focused grocery store located in Wilmington’s historically underserved Northside neighborhood,” according to the announcement…
