White Former Police Officer Found Guilty of Murder

On Monday, a jury convicted 48-year-old Adam Coy of murdering Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man, in 2020. The incident occurred in Columbus, Ohio, when Coy responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle and fatally shot Hill as he exited a garage.

Coy claimed he mistook keys Hill was holding for a gun and fired in self-defense. However, the prosecution argued that Coy could have taken alternative actions, such as identifying Hill or checking for warrants, to avoid using deadly force.

The jury found Coy guilty of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault. He faces a potential life sentence. The Columbus Police Department fired Coy shortly after the shooting.

Trial Delays and Sentencing

The trial was delayed due to Coy’s cancer treatment. The sentencing date has not yet been set.
