Rep. Mace introduces Rape Shield Enhancement Act to protect assault victims’ privacy

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Rep. Nancy Mace introduced the Rape Shield Enhancement Act on Monday, a bill Mace said will protect victims from unfair judgment or blame in assault cases.

The proposed legislation, if enacted, directs the Judicial Conference to evaluate and recommend updates to federal rules, ensuring that victims’ personal information remains confidential in court when it is not pertinent to the case.

“As a survivor, I know firsthand how important it is to protect our privacy and dignity,” Mace said. “We deserve the strongest safeguards against having our personal lives exposed and scrutinized in court. This bill could be a huge step forward in preventing unnecessary, hurtful disclosures about a victim’s past, helping ensure survivors aren’t re-victimized by the legal process itself.”…
