Harris cancels Howard University appearance

Additional Coverage:

Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, did not address supporters at her alma mater, Howard University, on election night.

The gathering became subdued as swing states were called for Trump. However, supporters remained hopeful, recognizing Harris’s historic journey as the first woman of color to run for vice president.

Cheryl Taylor, a Howard alumna who recruited Harris for a sorority, expressed pride in Harris’s achievements and dismissed attacks on her racial identity. First-year student Kendall Claytor praised Harris as a role model.

William Ward, a 65-year-old attendee, hoped to witness history, while Jerry Patterson emphasized the importance of democracy and women’s rights.

Howard University, founded in 1867, has a rich history of producing black leaders, including Harris, Thurgood Marshall, and Stokely Carmichael. Harris described it as a place where individuals can transform into their aspirations.
