Grambling State rallies to beat Alabama State 24-23, climbs in SWAC West standings

GRAMBLING, La. ( KTVE/KARD ) – Grambling State entered the fourth quarter trailing Alabama State 23-10, but rallied with a 14-0 run to secure a 24-23 victory.

“I’m an immature winner, you know, when I win I’m always looking at what we could have done better instead of enjoying the win. It might be too late for me, you know, probably 20 plus years of me feeling like that, so might be too late for me, but I’m happy that the coaches and the players and the support staff and everybody was able to enjoy the win. But, I sit in a different chair. I sit in a different chair and I understand it, you know, that you can go in there and say, ‘Ok we want to do this, we want to do that,’ then everybody like, ‘You should be undefeated.’ No. We 5-5, that’s the reality of it, so we gotta figure out, I have to figure out. That’s my job of how we got to 5-5. How do you beat the two best teams in the {SWAC} east? Ok. And that really messes me up. So I think Saturday, you know, just being down like that and fighting back, they still have some fight in ’em, but we still have a ways to go with ’em. And as coaches making sure we’re putting our players in a right situation, in a good situation. It’s never gonna be a great situation ’cause you gotta get 11 people doing the same thing. {But} put ’em in a good situation and put ’em to where they can win their 1-on-1’s. I thought the kids won their 1-on-1’s and I thought the coaches put them in good situations.”

The team has experienced highs and lows, with periods of energy followed by lulls. Their breakthrough came from taking responsibility for mistakes and a dose of tough love…
