Walking to Independence: Kids Enjoy Freedom on Their Way to Practice

When it came time for swim practice, a local mother decided that her daughters, ages 5 and 9, could handle the three-block walk from school. Initially, her husband had reservations, but the girls were eager to try.

Before they set out, they reviewed safety protocols, including staying together and knowing where to seek help if needed. Surprisingly, the girls were not apprehensive at all.

On the first day of practice, the mother anxiously awaited her daughters’ arrival. To her relief, they had walked independently and were already preparing for their swim.

As the swim season progressed, more families joined in on the walking initiative. By the end, four sets of siblings were making the trek together.

The children relished the independence and the opportunity to explore their neighborhood. The mother believes that allowing her daughters to walk to practice has fostered their sense of self-reliance and community connection.

She encourages other parents to consider allowing their children to walk independently, fostering a sense of adventure and responsibility.
