There are some people, who, when they see a problem, immediately look for ways they can help solve it. Dr. Kip Schumacher is one of those people. And that’s why it’s fitting that he was honored this week with the 2024 Civic Cup Award, the community’s highest honor for service.

Now in its 92nd year, the award has gone to many who have quietly been at the center of civic life for decades, and Schumacher is certainly among them.

A Lafayette native, he became an emergency room physician, working at Opelousas General Hospital for 17 years. Then he saw a way to help emergency rooms become more efficient and founded the Schumacher Group, now SCP Health, in 1994, with the goal of aiding hospitals with staffing, quality management and other issues…
