Scientists have discovered the largest coral colony in the world, dubbed the “mega” coral, in the southwest Pacific Ocean. The massive colony, located in the Solomon Islands, is over 100 feet long and 18 feet high.
Underwater footage revealed the colony’s true nature after scientists initially mistook it for a shipwreck. It is believed to be around 300 years old.
Coral colonies, like this one, are made up of countless small creatures called polyps. The mega colony is a species known as Pavona clavus and has a unique flat shape.
Despite its size, the colony’s future is uncertain. Coral colonies worldwide face threats from climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Ocean acidification, caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, makes it harder for corals to build their skeletons.
While the mega colony is currently healthy, its surroundings show signs of coral die-off. However, its high reproductive rate may help ensure its survival.
