Caltrain’s electrified service is drawing in record-breaking numbers, with October ridership hitting its highest since pre-COVID times. The agency reported over 753,000 passengers last month—a 54% increase from October 2023. Average weekday ridership reached nearly 27,000, a notable 38% boost from last October. Weekends are seeing especially impressive gains, with Saturday ridership surging 169% and Sunday up 142%.
Switching from diesel to electric in October led to a 17% ridership rise since August, defying typical seasonal declines. “It’s immensely gratifying to see riders embracing our new service,” said Executive Director Michelle Bouchard. Caltrain’s ambitious Electrification Project is the first of its kind in North America, marking a transformative moment in rail transit as the system celebrates 160 years of service between San Francisco and San Jose.
