Every member of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is spending a few moments today thinking about a colleague who was shot and killed in the line of duty nearly eight decades ago.
On Nov. 15, 1945, Sergeant Albert Bowe was fatally shot by an armed robbery suspect after stopping the suspect vehicle on Northeast Sandy Boulevard near 72nd Avenue in Portland.
The incident stemmed from the robbery the previous night at the Viking Tavern in Troutdale. After a short pursuit, the stolen car stopped at 7421 N.E. Sandy Boulevard. As Bowe approached the vehicle, the driver, John “Jack” Drew, fired six times, hitting the sergeant twice. During the hail of gunfire, Bowe was able to shoot Drew twice in the groin and several times into the vehicle before falling to the pavement…
