Until it happened to a roommate many years ago, I mostly thought that someone creeping up at night to steal the license plate off of your car was only something that you saw in the movies or on TV, because until that moment, I didn’t know anyone it had ever happened to.
Luckily, it was noticed a very short time after the theft had happened, calls were made to the police and the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, and new plates were eventually issued. The whole episode was painless, for the most part.
