A series of unfortunate decisions by Louisville with 5 seconds left led to a stunning 38-35 upset loss to Stanford on Saturday.
The Cardinals and head coach Jeff Brohm decided to go for a fourth down from the Stanford 45-yard line with the game tied and 11 seconds remaining. The pass from quarterback Tyler Shough fell incomplete and Stanford got the ball back with just five ticks left on the clock.
The Cardinal ran a quick pass play, resulting in just a 1-yard gain and stopping the clock with a second left. Stanford was still well out of field goal range, but a questionable personal foul on Louisville defensive back Tayon Holloway put them on the edge of field goal range.
