More than 400 people ask SC to not release Susan Smith from prison

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS/WBTV) – Convicted murderer Susan Smith, who has served 30 years of her life sentence, will be asking the state to release her on parole Wednesday.

Smith, 53, was found guilty of drowning her two young boys in a Union County lake, and claimed a Black man stole her car from her with her children inside.

Her version of what happened made international headlines in October 1994 before investigators found after a 9-day search that she was responsible.

As of 12 p.m. on Monday, 471 people wrote to the state regarding her parole hearing. According to officials, only 6 of the correspondences received by the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, the Office of Victim Services, were in favor of her release…
