Crews continue to demolish the Avalon apartment building in downtown Newark on Tuesday.

Crews have begun demolishing the historic Avalon apartment building in downtown Newark after a March fire left the property unsalvageable.

The demolition began Tuesday and is expected to last around two weeks, LEADS CEO Nathan Keirns said. The Newark-based community action agency owns the building, 86 W. Main St., and announced last month its decision to demolish the three-story building after considering other options.

During the March fire, the building sustained significant damage. Part of the roof collapsed, and firefighters believe fire damage and water they used to oust it might have weakened the structure…
