A $50 million redevelopment of the former Bucyrus-Erie campus in South Milwaukee is moving ahead, with a groundbreaking on 171 apartments expected in early spring.
The project is the recipient of $3 million in county funds, including $2.5 million in federal money that was doled out to the county at the height of the pandemic and $500,000 in Community Development Block Grants, the first time Milwaukee County has used such funds for affordable housing construction.
Slated to include a mix of affordable and market-rate apartments, the project is expected to reinvigorate the former Bucyrus campus at 1100 Milwaukee Ave. and spur “further redevelopment and positive change” in downtown South Milwaukee, according to the city ordinance that changed the site’s zoning to allow the project…
