City of Toledo prepares for grant opportunities under new federal administration

The city of Toledo was awarded a record-breaking amount of federal and state grants in 2024, but as it prepares for next year, the city is bracing for funding opportunities under the future Trump administration.

At a meeting Tuesdy of the Finance, Debt, & Oversight Committee, Simon Nyi, the grants commissioner for the city, presented council with a request for $77,000 to contract with a Washington lobbying firm. In 2024, Mr. Nyi’s team brought in $94 million to the city through state and federal grants. In 2023, the city was awarded $62.1 million, and in 2022, the city was awarded $40.6 million.

“[This is] a historically unique level of funding to have available,” Mr. Nyi said, who started with the city in 2022. “The only time these kinds of dollars were invested by the federal government into projects was during the Great Depression and the New Deal.”…
