Bird Flu Detected in Raw Milk

California health officials are warning consumers to avoid raw milk from lot No. 20241109 produced by Raw Farm, LLC. Bird flu was detected in a sample of the milk.

The company has voluntarily recalled the product with a “best by” date of Nov. 27.

Consumers can get refunds at the place of purchase. Retailers have also removed the affected milk from their shelves.

Pasteurized milk remains safe to drink, as the heating process kills bird flu and other pathogens.

While raw milk has proponents, the FDA warns against its consumption due to the risk of foodborne illnesses. Raw milk lacks the pasteurization process that eliminates harmful bacteria.

Despite the warning, no illnesses have been reported from the contaminated lot of raw milk. The finding came from routine testing by the County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory.

California’s Department of Food and Agriculture has tested Raw Farm facilities, which were negative for bird flu. Twice-weekly testing of raw milk banks will continue.
