Suspected driver, vehicle located in hit-and-run death of Palm Beach County teacher

WELLINGTON — A vehicle and driver suspected of being involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash Monday in Wellington have been located, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators said Tuesday, Dec. 10 that a 2019 Ford F450 pickup has been recovered for investigative purposes. The vehicle is believed to have been involved in a crash Monday morning that killed Toshimi Janiga, a longtime area educator who in 2021 was named Palm Beach County’s Teacher of the Year.

Investigators said Janiga, 62, was killed shortly before 5:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 when she was struck by a vehicle while walking south and crossing the intersection of Aero Club Drive and South Club Drive. The vehicle did not stop as it made a left turn from the Lakefield community and continued north on Aero Club, the sheriff’s office said.
