Homes should work for the people living in them, no matter the person’s age or ability. So says Brian Dunbar, director of Colorado State University’s Institute for the Built Environment (IBE).
To advance the goal of developing healthy, thriving communities, IBE created its Lifelong Homes and Communities pilot certification program. The program provides guidelines for developing multigenerational communities with homes that people can live in from birth to death. Sonders, a master planned new-home development in Fort Collins, Colo., is the first community to receive pre-certification from IBE. The brainchild of developer Actual Communities, Sonders features single-story homes from Thrive Home Builders and Bridgewater Homes, along with five parks, a garden, and other interactive features that make it a livable community for a lifetime.
