Tackling Retail Theft: Operation Smash & Grab

Between November 30 and December 7, 2024, a collaborative initiative led by investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and several other law enforcement agencies aimed to combat the escalating issue of retail theft in the region.

This operation, conducted at the Victoria Gardens Shopping Center and various retail stores across Apple Valley, Victorville, and Hesperia, resulted in significant law enforcement activity, including 12 felony arrests and 52 misdemeanor arrests, along with the recovery of $6,865.57 in stolen property.

Addressing Rising Concerns

In November 2023, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department observed a concerning rise in theft incidents at retail locations. These thefts frequently involve organized crews that conspire to execute various criminal activities, including robberies, burglaries, and vandalism. Such actions not only result in financial losses for businesses but also compromise the safety and comfort of the shopping experience for local residents.

Focused Law Enforcement Efforts

Operation Smash & Grab was launched with the objective of disrupting these criminal enterprises affecting shopping districts in Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. By employing both conventional and innovative investigative methods, the operation seeks to dismantle retail theft crews and mitigate the negative impact of their activities on the community.
