New laws aim to strengthen protections for kids on school buses

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed bills into law that aim to keep children safe as they enter and exit school buses.

Public Acts 161, 162 and 163 of 2024 allow school districts to equip buses with camera systems that can track cars that fail to stop for a school bus, then send the funds raised from the violations back to school districts to be used for transportation safety. Whitmer’s office says the changes will better enforce the laws that keep kids safe.

For years, drivers traveling in both directions have been required to come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away from a bus that is stopped and flashing its red lights. They’re not allowed to resume driving until the bus does or until it turns off its red flashing lights. The only exception is for drivers who are going in the opposite direction of the school bus and are separated by a physical barrier, including a grass median or concrete wall…
