Knitting volunteer creates 300 hats for Chicago refugees enduring cold winter

It’s been nearly 70 years since Margie Chan’s family immigrated to Chicago during the cold month of January.  All these years later, she has acclimated to the long winter months but carries a soft spot for other asylum seekers who are facing their first cold winter in a new city.

“I was watching all the coverage on the news about the migrants coming up,” she said. “I live right in the middle of two shelters. … These people aren’t staying two weeks and then going somewhere. They’re here and they’re going to go through the winter.”

So she picked up her knitting needles and went to work…
