WESTMINSTER, Colo. (KDVR) — Another Colorado city could join the list of places where selling pets is banned. City councilors in Westminster could be exploring banning pet sales in the city soon.

Westminster Councilor Amber Hott said council staff is in the early process of drafting the ordinance. It is an effort to end the practice of supporting puppy mills.
“Almost 100 percent of puppies that are sold at pet stores come from out-of-state puppy mills,” Hott said. “They are neglected, they are not given any affection, they don’t have time to exercise, and because they come from puppy mills, many of them have health issues, genetic issues, and they just suffer from neglect. When consumers go and buy these puppies, it’s really heartbreaking when they bring home a sick dog and there’s no recourse.”
