SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission sent out a notice to residents warning them of sewer discharge into local bodies of water.
A sewer main broke Wednesday morning causing rainwater, untreated sewage and waste to be discharged into local bodies of water, but the discharge has since been stopped. The main areas of impact are Watershops Pond and South Branch Mill River.
Springfield mayor urges action on supporting unhoused veterans
The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission says the pipe dates back all the way to 1925 and they were able to stop the discharge at approximately 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. An estimated 450,000 gallons of water were expected to be discharged.
