UT graduate who lost father to cancer plans to care for cancer patients

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — More than 2,000 students graduated from the University of Tennessee Friday at UT’s fall commencement. One graduate, however, is looking forward to helping care for cancer patients after she lost her father to the disease when she was younger.

The ceremony welcomed former Tennessee Governor and UT System President Lamar Alexander as the keynote speaker. In his speech, he reminded graduates of the importance of public service no matter what degree they graduated with.

“What I hope they’ll do is once they get out, whether they’re farmers or doctors or teachers or nurses – if they’ll spend part of their life in public service they’ll be among the crowd as Alex Haley used to say that would find the good and praise it instead of finding the bad and spreading it. We need more people to find the good and praise it,” said Alexander…
