BBB of Mississippi warns of ‘phantom charges’

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ( WHLT ) – Mississippians will want to pay close attention to any notices from their medical insurance companies.

Scammers have found a way to bill people and their insurance companies for products and services they never received. Officials with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) said these “phantom charges” are becoming more frequent.

“We see this more often than I care to admit that we get calls from people who get calls from a medical device company like a back brace, or knee brace, or thermal socks or some sort of what they would call a durable medical device. And what these companies do is they’re billing Medicaid, Medicare, or even private insurance for items,” explained John O’Hara, CEO of the BBB of Mississippi.
