Plans unveiled for world’s first commercial fusion power plant in Chesterfield

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Inside the Patrick Henry Building in Richmond on Tuesday afternoon, Governor Glenn Youngkin joined state and local lawmakers to unveil plans for the world’s first commercial fusion power plant in Chesterfield.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a Massachusetts company, plans to independently finance, build, own and operate the grid-scale fusion power plant at the James River Industrial Center, a Dominion Energy-owned site.

The company said the plant will generate about 400 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 150,000 homes in the region.
