Nonprofit steps up to plate to help struggling Atlanta family

ATLANTA — Antrell Tate has dreams of playing professional baseball. Every swing and hit gets the 11-year-old further to home. His mother, Shonquetta, and her family of six have spent the last two years handling life’s curveballs. She and her husband lost their jobs and home and lived on food stamps.

“It turned to doing illegal things when you don’t want to,” Tate said. “Illegal things led to other things, and you grow from that because you don’t want to be taken from your kids.”

Then, with a connection through Atlanta Public Schools, the Tate family found a coach. Former Major League Baseball player and pro scout C.J. Stewart and his wife, Kelli, run the nonprofit LEAD Center for Youth…
