Downtown Des Moines loses a Thai and Japanese restaurant on New Year’s Eve

Downtown Des Moines is about to lose a restaurant serving sushi and drunken noodles. Blu Thai Food & Sushi announced plans to close after business on Dec. 31.

On social media, the Thai and Japanese restaurant in the Western Gateway neighborhood in downtown Des Moines cited “financial hardships” as the reason for the shutter.

In November 2020, the restaurant closed its East Village location after its lease expired at 215 E. Locust St. Blu Thai & Sushi made the move to the Western Gateway neighborhood in downtown Des Moines in April 2022, taking over 309 13th St., formerly home to the Fighting Burrito, which closed in 2019 .

The long and narrow restaurant features glass windows looking to the west, light woods brightened by pops of blue on the walls and an open kitchen for spying on the cooks. Look overhead to see blue and yellow artwork that includes Des Moines landmarks…
