Cramerton creates pocket park for sculpture

Cramerton town officials have put up a sculpture near Riverside Drive, creating a pocket park where people can enjoy the public art.

What is it?

The town was gifted the Helix/R sculpture in 2018, but town officials had to raise funds to put it up, said Cramerton Mayor Pro Tem Richard Atkinson.

Who funded it?

Ultimately, it didn’t cost the town in public funds to put the sculpture up. It was instead funded through private donations of more than $100,000, Atkinson said.

The sculpture was created by artist John Rietta and originally installed at the Marriott plaza at the corner of Trade and Tryon streets in Charlotte in 1983, Atkinson said. It was removed from the plaza in 2018 so that the plaza could be renovated…
