Melbourne officer ‘thankful’ after being burned in fire while rescuing dog

The long road of physical and financial healing for Anthony Ciraco continues as his mentor and band of brothers and sisters in blue work to make sure he recovers from injuries suffered in a recent Melbourne fire.

Ciraco, a newly hired Melbourne Police officer whose career is on hold for the time being, suffered significant second-degree burns in the Dec. 18 kitchen fire and a rescue effort to save his button-eyed bulldog mix, Buddy.

“The support from the community has been truly humbling,” Ciraco said in a statement to FLORIDA TODAY, expressing his appreciation “for all the love and support.”

Ciraco, who had no renter’s insurance, lost most of his possessions to the fire. He is out of the hospital and staying with his longtime mentor, Jeffery Koeberl, a retired Melbourne police officer, and his family, as short-term living arrangements are sought…
