CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Metro Richmond Zoo is asking for the public’s help to name its new baby pygmy hippo that the zoo welcomed just before the holidays .
The Metro Richmond Zoo’s new pygmy hippo was born on Dec. 9 to parents Iris and Corwin and needs a name.
Missing dog returns to Florida home, rings doorbell
The zoo has narrowed down the following four names for the public to vote on to name the new pygmy hippo:
- Poppy — a flower like her mother’s name
- Juniper — an evergreen shrub to remember winter
- Hammie Mae — a sweet and southern tie to Virginia ham
- Omi — which means “water” in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa
The poll will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31 with the official name to be announced on New Year’s Day.
